Rotem Mathias, a 16-year-old Israeli-American boy, survived a Hamas attack thanks to his parents’ bravery. Living near the Gaza border in southern Israel, the family had less than a minute to find shelter after being alerted to the surprise attack. The assault claimed the lives of 1,200 Israelis.

In an interview with ABC News, Mathias recounted the horrifying experience. He said, “The last thing my dad said is that he’s lost his arm. Then, my mom died on top of me.” Desperate to survive, Mathias pretended to be dead for nearly 30 minutes until he was rescued by the Israeli Defence Forces.

Mathias revealed that his parents had messaged their family group chat before the attack, expressing concern about hearing voices in Arabic and distant gunfire. They went silent for 20 minutes before Mathias responded, informing the chat that his parents were dead and urging them to call for help.

In a surprise attack on Saturday, Hamas launched 5,000 rockets at Israel and infiltrated the country using various means, including bulldozers, motorcycles, and paragliders.

In response, Israel has initiated massive airstrikes and is mobilizing troops near the Gaza border. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to use unprecedented force to eliminate Hamas. In preparation for a ground assault, Israel has urged over a million civilians in north Gaza to relocate to the south.

However, the United Nations has warned of a potential disaster, stating that it would be impossible to relocate the million inhabitants of north Gaza to the south. The situation remains tense as both sides continue to escalate the conflict.
