Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing criticism for his conduct in the House of Commons. A video circulated online shows Trudeau playfully sticking out his tongue and winking at newly appointed Speaker Greg Fergus.
In the video, Speaker Fergus introduces Trudeau as the “honourable Prime Minister” before his address. Trudeau quickly corrects him by calling himself “very honourable” and winks.
The video gained traction on social media, with many expressing their disapproval. Some questioned the acceptability of such behavior in parliament, calling it a joke. Others speculated that Trudeau may have picked up the gesture from watching TikTok.
One comment sarcastically referred to Trudeau as “precious” with the wink and tongue gesture. Some found his actions “gross,” while one Twitter user referred to his tongue sticking out as “creepy lizard tongue.”
Greg Fergus made history as the first Black Canadian to hold the position of Speaker in the House of Commons. His election followed the resignation of Anthony Rota, who stepped down after honoring a man associated with a Nazi military unit during World War 2.
Fergus’s election was met with praise from Trudeau, who highlighted its significance for inspiring younger generations to get involved in politics.
