Former US President Donald Trump has accused his successor Joe Biden of indirectly funding the Hamas attack on Israel. Trump stated that Israel has the right to defend itself with overwhelming force against these Hamas attacks. He alleged that American taxpayer dollars helped fund these attacks, which reportedly came from the Biden Administration.
This accusation from Trump supports the Republican claims that the $6 billion released to Iran last month as part of a prisoner exchange deal was used to fund the Hamas attack. However, White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates referred to Trump’s claim as a “shameful lie.” He emphasized that the money can only be used for verifiable purchases of humanitarian needs such as food and medicine.
The situation in Congress, with the lower chamber currently lacking a leader, is likely to complicate any US action regarding the matter. This suggests that keeping US partisan politics out of the issue may be challenging.
The recent escalation in the Israel-Palestine conflict witnessed a massive rocket barrage and ground, air, and sea offensive by Hamas. Israel’s army reported that more than 300 Israelis were killed and 1,000 wounded, while Gaza officials stated that intense Israeli air strikes resulted in at least 232 Palestinian deaths and nearly 1,700 injuries.
Hamas fighters launched thousands of rockets and breached Gaza’s security barrier, attacking nearby Israeli towns and military posts. They also targeted residents and passersby. The attack, named “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood,” called on resistance fighters in the West Bank and other Arab and Islamic nations to join. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh expressed confidence in their imminent victory.
In response to these deadly attacks, the Israel Defense Forces declared their readiness for war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the IDF would use all its force to destroy Hamas’s capabilities and seek vengeance for the harm inflicted on Israel and its people.
