After rumors of renowned economist Amartya Sen’s death circulated on social media, his daughter Nandana Sen took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm that her “baba is totally fine.” She shared a photo of herself and her daughter posing with Amartya Sen, thanking everyone for their concern and debunking the fake news. Nandana also mentioned that they had just spent a wonderful week together with family in Cambridge, where Amartya Sen is teaching two courses a week at Harvard and working on his gender book. The false rumor gained traction when a handle claiming to belong to Nobel laureate Claudia Goldin posted about Amartya Sen’s death. However, it was later revealed to be a hoax created by Italian journalist Tommaso Debenedetti. Nandana Sen’s X profile is filled with recent posts and photos from her visit to her father, including one where they enjoy lunch together and another where Amartya Sen is seen reading a newspaper to his granddaughter. Amartya Sen currently holds positions as Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University and formerly served as Master of Trinity College at the University of Cambridge. He is known for his contributions to welfare economics and was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998, as well as India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999.
