Restaurants in California have been implementing “vomit fees” to discourage customers from becoming excessively intoxicated and vomiting on their premises, particularly during bottomless brunches. One eatery in Oakland has been using a sign for two years warning mimosa drinkers that they will be charged a $50 cleaning fee if they vomit inside the restaurant. Although nobody has been charged the fee yet, the sign has proven to be an effective deterrent. Another San Francisco restaurant also includes a warning on their menu, stating that any incidents resulting from intoxication will incur a $50 cleaning fee per person. This has led to a decrease in indoor vomiting incidents. It is worth noting that it is not just restaurants that charge cleaning fees for messes, as Uber also allows drivers to charge cleaning fees ranging from $20 to $150 in the US.
