The AAP’s commitment to the INDIA opposition bloc amidst the ongoing row with the Congress in Punjab was reiterated by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday. Despite the bitter dispute over the arrest of MLA Sukhpal Khaira on drugs charges, Kejriwal assured that the AAP will not separate from the INDIA alliance. Kejriwal also emphasized his party’s dedication to the war on drugs, stating that they are committed to ending addiction.

The arrest of Khaira, who is part of the INDIA bloc along with Congress, has sparked a heated AAP vs Congress fight in Punjab. Both parties aim to work together to defeat BJP in the state elections this year and the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Congress leaders in Punjab have reportedly accused the AAP of “targeting” senior leaders and pointed out the arrests of ex-ministers Sadhu Singh Dharamsot and Bharat Bhushan Ashu, as well as ex-Deputy Chief Minister OP Soni. However, the AAP has dismissed claims of political vendetta and insisted that Khaira’s arrest is part of the Punjab government’s zero-tolerance policy against drug smugglers.

The AAP and Congress were set to divide seats in Punjab, Delhi, and Gujarat as part of their alliance plans. However, tensions over Khaira’s arrest have strained the relationship, particularly in Punjab. Khaira’s arrest is significant as he has been vocal against any alliance with the AAP and holds influential positions within the Congress.

In response to the row, Congress national boss Mallikarjun Kharge stated that they will not tolerate any injustice. He further emphasized that those who commit injustice do not survive for long. Additionally, Minister Anmol Gagan Mann claimed to have received instructions from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to contest all 13 seats, indicating a lack of cooperation within the AAP as well.

The situation remains tense, with both parties involved in a political battle.
