An auto driver who was detained by the police in the Ujjain rape case has claimed that he helped the 15-year-old victim by giving her clothes. The driver, Rakesh Malviya, stated that his only mistake was not taking the girl to the hospital but leaving her on the road. The police have also stated that those who did not assist the girl may face charges under child sex abuse laws for not reporting the crime. Malviya spent four nights in police custody before it was determined that he was not the suspect. He admitted to giving the girl a khaki shirt and expressed regret for not taking her to the hospital. It has been widely criticized that no one helped the girl for two hours until a temple priest finally assisted her and called the police. The actions of some residents of Ujjain have raised concerns, with CCTV footage showing a man appearing to speak rudely to the girl. However, the man’s brother claimed it was a misunderstanding and expressed remorse for not being able to help her. Another Ujjain resident criticized the lack of assistance and expressed disappointment that such an incident could occur in their city. The main accused, Bharat Soni, is currently in jail, while the victim is recovering in the hospital. The Madhya Pradesh police invested significant efforts, including interrogating hundreds of people and reviewing footage from over 700 CCTV cameras, to solve the case.
