Yuzvendra Chahal, the talented leg-spinner from India, has been left out of India’s World Cup squad, despite being one of the country’s best performers in white-ball cricket in recent years. Since making his debut in 2016, Chahal has taken the third-highest number of wickets in ODIs for India, placing him just behind Kuldeep Yadav in the list of top Indian spinners. Despite his impressive record, Chahal has missed out on three World Cups – the T20 World Cups in 2021 and 2022, as well as the 2023 ODI World Cup. Even though Chahal was a part of the 2022 World Cup squad, he didn’t get the opportunity to play a single match.
In a conversation with Wisden, Chahal expressed his understanding of the limited number of spots available in the squad and accepted the decision of the team management. He acknowledged that only fifteen players could be selected for the World Cup and stated that he has become accustomed to such decisions, as this is his third World Cup. Despite the disappointment, Chahal believes in moving forward and not dwelling on missed opportunities.
Chahal also emphasized that he doesn’t focus on competing with other spinners in the Indian team, as he believes his performance on the field will determine his place in the side. He understands that there will come a time when someone else will replace him, and he is prepared for that situation.
Initially, India included Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav as the spinners in the World Cup squad. However, an injury to Axar led to the inclusion of Ravichandran Ashwin as his replacement, despite Ashwin’s limited appearances in ODIs for India in recent years. Nonetheless, Chahal’s primary concern is India’s success in the World Cup, and he remains focused on contributing to the team’s victory.
Chahal appreciates the performances of his fellow spinners and sees them as his teammates, regardless of whether he is a part of the squad or not. He sees the challenge as an opportunity to work harder and make a strong comeback to the team.
Several former cricketers have voiced their support for Chahal and believe that his absence from the World Cup squad could have a significant impact on the Indian team. However, Chahal remains optimistic and is praying for India’s success in the tournament.
