The United States is aware of reports regarding the alleged ties between an Indian media outlet and China. However, the US government cannot comment on the accuracy of these claims, according to a State Department spokesperson. The spokesperson emphasized that the US strongly supports the important role of the media, including social media, in a vibrant and free democracy. The US has raised concerns about media freedom and human rights with the Indian government and other countries through diplomatic channels. The State Department spokesperson stated that they do not have additional information about the specific circumstances related to this outlet. In August, The New York Times reported that the Indian media outlet had received funds from an Indian American linked to Chinese propaganda interests. The news portal’s raid and the subsequent detention of journalists have been strongly condemned by the Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), an advocacy organization. The IAMC has called for the immediate dismissal of the “baseless” case against NewsClick and the release of all unjustly detained journalists.
