Dr Kafeel Khan, the doctor involved in the hospital deaths in Uttar Pradesh in 2017, has written a ‘thank you’ note to actor Shah Rukh Khan for his recent movie ‘Jawan’. Dr Khan believes that the movie draws parallels to the Gorakhpur deaths, which resulted in his termination. He was unable to send the letter directly to Shah Rukh Khan, so he posted it on social media instead. The letter expresses Dr Khan’s appreciation for the actor’s commitment to using cinema to address social and political issues. He also thanks Shah Rukh Khan for being a beacon of hope. Dr Khan was suspended, arrested, and jailed following the deaths of 63 children due to a lack of oxygen supply in a Gorakhpur hospital. Although he claims to have been cleared of major charges, the government denies this. Dr Khan describes the movie’s portrayal of the Gorakhpur Encephalitis incident as deeply moving, and he relates to the character of Dr Eeram Khan, played by Sanya Malhotra. The plot of ‘Jawan’ includes a sub-plot where the character struggles to secure oxygen supply for sick children, resulting in their deaths and the doctor’s imprisonment. In his letter, Dr Khan expresses his desire to meet Shah Rukh Khan, director Atlee Kumar, and the film crew to express his gratitude.
