Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has stated that Canada will maintain “constructive relations” with India despite the ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two countries. Trudeau emphasized the importance of having diplomats in India and dismissed reports that India had requested the withdrawal of Canadian diplomats. He also expressed that Canada does not intend to retaliate by asking India to remove its diplomats based in Canada.

The strained relations between India and Canada stem from Trudeau’s allegations of potential involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India condemned the allegations as baseless. Last month, India asked Canada to reduce its diplomatic staff in the country, citing the need for equity in diplomatic presence. India also demanded that Canada crack down on terrorists and anti-India elements operating from its soil, as well as suspended visa services for Canadians.

Speaking in Washington, India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, expressed the need for both countries to engage in dialogue and resolve their differences. He also highlighted the issue of “permissiveness” and stressed the importance of addressing it.
