A mob targeted Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s empty ancestral house in Imphal tonight, despite a security clampdown in the area. The incident occurred on the outskirts of the state capital, and security forces managed to push back the mob by firing in the air. However, the Chief Minister himself resides in a separate, well-guarded official home in the center of Imphal.
According to a police officer, there was an attempt to attack the Chief Minister’s ancestral house at Heingang locality in Imphal. However, security forces stopped the mob around 100-150 meters away from the house. The ancestral house is guarded round-the-clock but remains unoccupied.
The Rapid Action Force (RAF) and state police personnel fired tear gas shells to disperse the mob, and additional barricades were installed near the house. The authorities also cut off the electricity supply in the area to reduce visibility and impede the protesters’ progress. Reports of injuries have not been received, although the protesters set tires on fire on a nearby road.
This incident occurred a day after student protests over the alleged killing of two teenagers by insurgents. Earlier today, a mob vandalized the deputy commissioner’s office in Imphal West district and set fire to two vehicles. Consequently, a curfew was re-imposed in Imphal East and West districts due to clashes between security forces and student protesters.
