A surprise attack by Hamas fighters on Israel has resulted in hundreds of Israelis losing their lives on Saturday, leading Israel to retaliate with aggressive airstrikes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to completely destroy Hamas strongholds in Gaza, reducing them to rubble, as the conflict continues to escalate. The attack took place at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday when Hamas launched a massive barrage of rockets into southern Israel. Air raid sirens sounded across the country, and the Iron Dome system, one of the world’s best defense systems, was activated. The group fired a total of 5,000 rockets, and in response, Israel’s military launched 2,500 rockets. Smoke filled the sky over residential areas in Israel, and people sought shelter as sirens blared. Mohammed Deif, the head of the al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, stated that their first strike, which targeted enemy positions, airports, and military fortifications, exceeded 5,000 missiles and shells. This deadly escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has resulted in over 300 Israelis and 232 Palestinians losing their lives. In response to the attack, Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant stated that Hamas had committed a criminal act, indiscriminately attacking women, children, and the elderly. He warned that Hamas would soon realize its grave mistake, and Israel would change the reality in the Gaza Strip. The Iron Dome missile defense system used by Israel is designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets, mortars, and artillery shells. It has been protecting Israel since 2011, following the 2006 attacks by Hezbollah during the Lebanon conflict. Hamas, established in 1987 during the First Intifada, seeks to establish an Islamic state in Palestine. The group currently governs Gaza and took control of the region in 2007 after a violent conflict with its rival, Fatah. Hamas is considered a terrorist organization by numerous countries, including Israel, the United States, and the European Union. The Israel-Palestine conflict began with Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005. After winning the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections, Hamas’s refusal to renounce violence and recognize Israel led to aid cuts from Israel and the U.S. Despite efforts over the years, the conflict remained unresolved, and in January 2023, Islamic Jihad in Gaza launched rockets towards Israel after Israeli troops killed several gunmen and civilians in a raid on a refugee camp. In October, Hamas conducted its most significant attack on Israel in years, prompting Israel’s military to be on high alert, carrying out strikes targeting Hamas in Gaza and calling up reservists.
