Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has clarified that carpooling in Bengaluru has not been banned. He stated that using non-commercial private vehicles with white number plates for carpooling is illegal. When asked about media reports claiming a ban on carpooling in Bengaluru, Mr Reddy asked for the document to prove it.

“The app-based carpooling services are running. Only one or two have been fined,” he added. The State government will hold a meeting with carpooling aggregators to discuss the issue.

Mr Reddy also emphasized that white number plates cannot be used for commercial purposes, while yellow number plates can be used for carpooling.

The remarks from the Transport Minister came after some media reports suggested that the Karnataka government has banned carpooling in Bengaluru, following demands from taxi driver associations.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Tejasvi Surya criticized the Karnataka government, claiming that they haven’t understood the concept of carpooling. He mentioned that countries like Singapore, France, and the US have exemptions allowing private vehicles for carpooling to address urban congestion.

Mr Surya urged Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who recently traveled to Singapore to see their best practices, to facilitate carpooling in Bengaluru by taking inspiration from their Car Pooling Exemption Order.
