MS Swaminathan, the renowned agricultural scientist and “Father of India’s Green Revolution,” has been praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his commitment and foresight in revolutionizing agriculture and ensuring food security in India. Swaminathan passed away on September 28, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking contributions to the field.
In his blog on narendramodi.in, PM Modi highlighted the profound impact of Swaminathan’s work on agricultural prosperity in India. Despite facing challenges, including food shortages in the early years of Indian independence, Swaminathan’s dedication and pioneering efforts led to a significant increase in wheat production, transforming India from a food-deficient nation into a self-sufficient one. His achievements earned him the title of “Father of the Indian Green Revolution.”
PM Modi also emphasized Swaminathan’s role in promoting sustainable agriculture and bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and its practical application. The agricultural scientist consistently advocated for ecological sustainability and the improvement of small farmers’ lives, particularly those of women farmers.
Swaminathan’s influence extended far beyond academia. He established a not-for-profit research foundation using the prize money from winning the World Food Prize in 1987. The foundation continues to undertake extensive work across various sectors, nurturing countless minds and inspiring a passion for learning and innovation.
As an institution builder, Swaminathan’s contributions include directing the International Rice Research Institute in Manila and establishing the South Asia Regional Centre of the institute in Varanasi in 2018.
PM Modi concludes his blog by affirming the importance of carrying forward Swaminathan’s principles of championing the cause of farmers and ensuring that scientific innovation benefits the agricultural sector, leading to long-term growth, sustainability, and prosperity for future generations.
