NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha, who was arrested by the Delhi Police under the anti-terror law, allegedly conspired to promote the narrative that Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh are disputed territories, according to the police. Purkayastha and HR head Amit Chakravarty were arrested on Tuesday by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police. Secret inputs revealed that Purkayastha, along with some Chinese employees, exchanged emails with the intent to show Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh as not part of India. These attempts to undermine the unity and territorial integrity of India were seen as a conspiracy by the accused individuals. The police also stated that Gautam Navlakha, a shareholder in NewsClick, remained involved in anti-Indian activities and had links with Gulam Nabi Fai, an agent of Pakistan’s ISI. The police further alleged that foreign funds have been siphoned off by Purkayastha and his associates. The accused individuals were also accused of conspiring to disrupt supplies and services essential to the community and spreading false narratives to discredit the efforts of the Indian government to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. It was also revealed that Purkayastha conspired with a group called People’s Alliance for Democracy and Secularism to sabotage the electoral process during the 2019 general elections. A raid was conducted on Tuesday at 88 locations in Delhi and seven in other states. The police applied for 15 days’ police remand for both accused individuals and got their custody for seven days. NewsClick’s office in Delhi has been sealed, and digital devices and documents have been seized for examination.
