Shubman Gill was ruled out of the Indian cricket team’s opening match at the Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia due to illness. Gill was reportedly suffering from dengue and India skipper Rohit Sharma confirmed that the youngster was not able to recover in time for the match. Ishan Kishan replaced Gill in the playing XI and will open the batting with Rohit on Sunday.
During the toss, Rohit mentioned that they had waited until the last minute for Gill’s fitness report, but unfortunately, he couldn’t recover. He also mentioned that the conditions are favorable for the bowlers and the ball will turn as the game goes on. Rohit expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, mentioning that they had played two good series before the warm-up games and have covered all bases.
Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bat first. He stated that it looks like a good wicket with the sun out, making it a good afternoon to bat. He mentioned that the team has achieved a good balance of giving players game time while keeping them fresh. Abbott, Stoinis, and Inglis miss out from the playing XI.
