The Supreme Court of India has dismissed a petition challenging Darwin’s theory of evolution and Einstein’s theory of special relativity. The court stated that scientific beliefs cannot be challenged through a writ petition under Article 32 of the Indian Constitution, which deals with fundamental rights.
The bench, consisting of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia, emphasized that if the petitioner disagrees with these theories, he is free to propagate his own beliefs instead of trying to prove them wrong in court.
Darwin’s Theory of Evolution posits that all living beings have evolved through natural selection, while Einstein’s equation E = mc2 states that energy and mass are interchangeable.
During the hearing, the petitioner, Raj Kumar, claimed that he had studied these theories in school and college but now believed them to be incorrect. The bench responded by stating that if Kumar believes the theories are incorrect, it is his responsibility to improve upon them, and the Supreme Court has no role to play in this matter.
