Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader Kalvakuntla Kavitha believes that the Women’s Reservation Bill will serve as an inspiration for women worldwide to step forward in public life. Speaking at an event in London, Kavitha called on women across continents to mobilize around the issue of gender equality in political representation. Kavitha highlighted the progress made in her own state of Telangana, which has been a leader in the representation of women in politics. She emphasized that if positive change can happen for the women of India, it will inspire many more women to get involved in policy making. The Women’s Reservation Bill, which provides for 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, was recently passed by Parliament. Kavitha expressed confidence that this bill will enable greater participation of women in India’s progress. She also acknowledged that political parties in India have been slow in addressing the issue of women’s representation and called for the Election Commission to step in and for more laws to be put in place to protect women’s rights. Kavitha’s speech drew applause and cheers from the audience as she emphasized the need for women around the world to connect and support each other on these issues. She also joked about her “strong opinions” and cautioned men to get used to hearing more of them from “our sisters.” Throughout her visit to the UK, Kavitha is engaging with the Indian diaspora and participating in events to foster cultural exchange between the two countries.
