Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar criticized Congress leader P Chidambaram for his comments on the women’s reservation law, stating that it is shameful to turn people’s ignorance into political equity. Speaking at an event, Dhankhar expressed his frustration with Chidambaram’s remarks that the law would not be implemented for several years. Referring to Chidambaram’s statement that the women’s reservation law is a “teasing illusion” or a “pie in the sky,” Dhankhar called it a “distorted mindset.” He emphasized that progress takes time and urged the youth to fight against such ignorance. The bill to provide 33% reservation to women in legislatures was recently passed by both houses of Parliament and has received assent from President Droupadi Murmu. However, the implementation of the law will require further steps, including the delimitation exercise for seat allocation. The quota for women in legislatures will be in effect for 15 years, with the possibility of extension by Parliament. The opposition has called for immediate implementation and the inclusion of Other Backward Classes in the reservation. This bill follows several previous attempts to pass a women’s reservation law since 1996.
