Former India opener Virender Sehwag has weighed in on the dilemma faced by the Indian team management regarding the number four spot for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. Sehwag expressed his support for Shreyas Iyer, stating that the batsman has proven himself and deserves to occupy the crucial position. Sehwag also highlighted Suryakumar Yadav’s need to play more innings in order to gain the trust of the management.

India recently had a successful dress rehearsal for the World Cup, winning a three-match ODI series against Australia. The performances of Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and particularly Suryakumar Yadav stood out, contributing significantly to the team’s victory. The bowling trio of Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravichandran Ashwin also impressed with their remarkable spells.

However, this series win has presented a challenge for the team management, as they now have multiple options for the coveted number four spot. While Iyer showcased his prowess by scoring a century in the second ODI, Yadav’s outstanding knock of 72 runs off just 37 balls in the same match added a layer of complexity to the decision.

Sehwag asserted that the number four position is crucial and should not be disturbed unnecessarily. He emphasized the importance of Iyer’s ability to stabilize an innings and score big, especially when the team loses wickets against the new ball. Sehwag believes that Iyer’s recent century has solidified his claim to the position.

On the other hand, Sehwag suggested that Yadav still needs to prove himself with more innings in ODIs. While Yadav has performed exceptionally well in T20 matches, Sehwag believes that other players like KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, and Ishan Kishan are capable of fulfilling that role in ODIs. According to Sehwag, Yadav must demonstrate his ability to score big runs and convince the selectors and management that he deserves a place in the team.

The ODI World Cup 2023 is set to commence on October 5, with the opening match between England and New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Team India will begin their campaign against Australia on October 8 in Chennai.
