U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Israel on Wednesday to meet with senior Israeli leaders, according to U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller. This visit comes as a show of solidarity and support for Israel following an unprecedented attack by Hamas over the weekend that resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 Israelis.

Miller stated that Blinken’s visit will allow him to directly hear from Israeli leaders about the situation they are facing and what kind of support they need. The Secretary of State is expected to arrive in Israel on Thursday. It is unclear at this time if Blinken will be traveling to other countries after his visit to Israel.

Over the weekend, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Israelis and the capture of numerous hostages. In response, Israel conducted airstrikes in Gaza, causing significant casualties and displacing a large number of Palestinians. The Gaza Health Ministry reported that at least 830 Palestinians have been killed and thousands more wounded in the Israeli airstrikes. The United Nations has also reported that over 180,000 people in Gaza have been left without homes.
