Apple has officially declared its first-generation Apple Watch, including the premium gold version, as “obsolete.” This means that the company will no longer provide repairs or upgrades for the product, even for those under the seven-year warranty. The Apple Watch was released in 2015 with a price range of $10,000 to $17,000 but was only available for one year before being replaced by less luxurious variations. The obsolete tag not only means no more software updates but also the end of hardware support.
Apple’s decision to render the first-generation Apple Watch obsolete means that they will no longer offer parts, repairs, or replacement services for the device at Apple Stores or Authorized Service Provider locations. This is significant as the original Apple Watch, also known as Series 0, was never updated beyond watchOS 4.3.2 in 2018. According to Apple’s website, a product is considered technologically outdated if it has been out of production for more than seven years. The Series 0 Apple Watch passed this milestone in September 2016 when it was discontinued in favor of newer versions like Series 2 and Series 1.
The gold Apple Watch Edition, particularly a favorite project of Jony Ive, Apple’s former head designer, gained attention from celebrities such as Karl Lagerfeld and Beyonce when it was first released. However, this exclusive device will no longer receive any support or repairs from Apple. Additionally, other Hermes-branded aluminum and stainless steel models of the original Apple Watch, as well as the ceramic Apple Watch Edition, are also considered outdated.
On a separate note, Apple recently launched the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 at their Wonderlust event. These new smartwatches come with significant upgrades compared to their predecessors. The Apple Watch Series 9 is available in Midnight, Pink, (Product) Red, Starlight, and Silver color options, with a price starting at Rs. 41,900. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is priced at Rs. 89,900 and offers Alpine Loop, Trail Loop, and Ocean band options.
