Hamas terrorists breached Gaza’s security barrier and attacked Israeli towns and military posts. They used vehicles, boats, and motorized paragliders to travel across the barrier and opened fire on residents and passersby. The gun battles resulted in the deaths of at least 70 people in Israel and 232 in Gaza, marking one of the bloodiest escalations in years. The Israeli military, engaged in live gun battles in 22 locations, called up reservists and labeled the operation “Swords of Iron.” Hamas released images of kidnapped Israelis, confirming the capture of soldiers and civilians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the country was at war and promised that the enemy would pay an unprecedented price. Rockets were launched towards Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, some bypassing the Iron Dome defense system and hitting buildings. The conflict led to widespread destruction, casualties, and disruptions. Western capitals condemned Hamas’s attacks, while foes of Israel, such as Iran and Hezbollah, expressed support for the terrorist group. The United States condemned the attacks and pledged support for Israel’s defense. UN Middle East peace envoy called for all sides to de-escalate tensions.
