Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has unveiled the newest addition to his family — a pet dog named Noorie. This surprise was meant for his mother, former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

In August, Mr. Gandhi went to Goa to bring Noorie, a Jack Russell Terrier puppy, home. Noorie was adopted from a dog kennel in North Goa’s Mapusa.

To mark World Animal Day, Mr. Gandhi shared a heartwarming video on YouTube. The video begins with Mr. Gandhi discussing his surprise plan.

“A little surprise for Ma,” says Rahul as he asks Sonia Gandhi to come outside. Moments later, the veteran politician is seen approaching the table and uncovering the box. Sonia Gandhi, who appears overjoyed after meeting Noorie, exclaims, “She is so cute.”

Alongside the video, Mr. Gandhi wrote, “I want you all to meet the newest and most adorable member of our family – our little pup, Noorie. She flew in from Goa straight into our arms and has become the light of our lives. Unconditional love and unwavering loyalty – there is so much that this beautiful animal can teach us! We must promise to protect and share our love with all living beings. #WorldAnimalDay.” The video has garnered a lot of love from people on social media.

One user commented, “He is a man of emotions. He is also an animal lover. Not just a leader, but a man with humanity.”

Another user added, “The way the dog expressed its happiness by wagging its tail vigorously melted my heart.”

Cynologist Heinrich Zimmermann organized the inaugural World Animal Day on March 24, 1925, in Berlin, Germany. He chose this date to coincide with the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint known for his love and care for animals and nature.

Over time, this celebration has grown into a global movement, and now World Animal Day is observed on October 4.
