India opener Shubman Gill, who has been recovering from dengue fever, is set to arrive in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. However, his participation in the crucial World Cup match against Pakistan on Saturday remains uncertain. While Gill’s teammates prepare to face Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, he will be making his way to Ahmedabad. A source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed, “Gill is doing absolutely fine and is set to leave Chennai for Ahmedabad today. It is still not clear whether Gill will have a light training session at Motera on Thursday. His recovery has been fine but we can’t be sure if he can play against Pakistan.”
Gill has already missed the first two World Cup games against Australia and Afghanistan. His platelet count had dropped to 70,000 last week, resulting in his admission to a Chennai hospital for medical tests. However, given Gill’s high fitness levels, he is expected to recover faster than some of his teammates.
There is a belief that even if Gill is only 70% fit, he could still be more effective than Ishan Kishan. However, dengue fever significantly weakens the body, and it would be fair to allow Gill to regain his peak physical condition before considering him for the Bangladesh game.
