The iconic Tower Bridge in London got stuck in an open position after allowing a boat to pass underneath on River Thames. This incident, which occurred on Thursday around 1.15 pm, caused major traffic jams in the city. According to the Independent, the bridge struggled to close, bringing chaos to London’s roads.

After more than half an hour, the bridge finally closed, much to the relief of bystanders. An eyewitness described the scene, saying, “I first thought it was nice to see the bridge open but then realized something might be wrong due to the different angles. I watched it for a little while. A lot of traffic built-up with two tourist buses waiting on the bridge and large crowds.”

The man also mentioned that people started cheering when the bridge eventually closed. He even spotted a Thames seal, which was a rare sight for him. Metro UK reported that a crucial passage in central London was temporarily cut off as the hydraulically driven bascules of the bridge struggled to drop back down.

Tower Bridge, a movable bridge, is located over River Thames between the Greater London boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Southwark. According to Britannica, it is a historic landmark in London that complements the nearby Tower of London. Constructed in 1894, the bridge has an entrance that is 76 meters (250 feet) broad and 240 meters (800 feet) long. Its twin towers rise 61 meters (200 feet) above the River Thames and are connected by two glass-covered walkways, which are popular among tourists.
