UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his condemnation of the Hamas attack against Israel, but also voiced his deep distress over Israel’s decision to impose a total siege on the Gaza Strip. Guterres emphasized that the humanitarian situation in Gaza was already extremely dire before the recent hostilities, and the imposition of the siege would only worsen the situation. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant announced that the complete siege would result in no electricity, food, water, or gas for the 2.3 million people living in Gaza. Palestinians in the region anticipated a major ground attack by Israel in an attempt to defeat Hamas and free hostages. Guterres emphasized that the violence was a result of a longstanding conflict and occupation with no political resolution in sight. While recognizing Israel’s security concerns, he reminded them to conduct military operations in compliance with international humanitarian law. Israel has reported over 700 deaths and responded with extensive strikes on Gaza, resulting in a death toll of 560 people. Guterres strongly condemned the attacks by Hamas and others against Israeli towns and villages, but also acknowledged the legitimate grievances of the Palestinian people. However, he stressed that acts of terror and the targeting of civilians can never be justified. The surprise attack by Hamas has shaken Israel, prompting the country to cut off supplies to the region. Guterres expressed deep distress over the complete siege and assured that the UN will continue efforts to provide aid to Gaza. He urged Israel to prioritize security concerns while Palestinians need a clear perspective on the establishment of their own state.
