Australian cricketer Marcus Stoinis’ dismissal during the Cricket World Cup 2023 match against South Africa sparked a major controversy. Stoinis was caught behind the stumps by Quinton De Kock after gloving a delivery from Kagiso Rabada. However, the on-field umpire gave him not out. South African captain Temba Bavuma immediately called for a review, and the replays clearly showed a spike when the ball passed the bat. The third umpire ultimately ruled Stoinis out.

Stoinis, however, was unhappy with the decision, arguing that the ball had hit his top hand and was not in contact with the bat at that moment. According to ICC laws, a batter cannot be given caught out if the glove that the ball touched is not touching the bat. The third umpire believed that the top glove was in contact with the bottom hand holding the bat, but Stoinis remained unconvinced.

In the match itself, South Africa defeated Australia by 134 runs. Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram both scored half-centuries, while Rabada and Keshav Maharaj delivered exceptional bowling performances, taking three and two wickets respectively. Australia has now lost both of their matches in the Cricket World Cup 2023.
